Christianity is often presented in a restrictive way. Following Jesus is presumed to be about our behavior, and the right behavior is determined by do’s and don’ts. But what if God’s intent for us to follow Jesus is simply to become more like Jesus? And furthermore, what if God promises that he will make us more like Jesus by giving us his Spirit? Then Christianity becomes a matter of discovery rather than of confinement. That is Paul’s great message in Galatians 5 when he contrasts living in the desires of the flesh with living by the Spirit of God. When the Spirit of God lives in you, the shape of your life reflects Jesus. And that reflection is characterized by virtues, or what Paul calls “fruit of the Spirit.” In this series we’ll discover what those virtues are, how they look on us, and ways to cultivate that virtuous living.
